Chris Turner
who studied band musicianship at the University from 1983-1986 has written
the song adopted by the Commonwealth Games to welcome the teams on arrival
in Manchester. The song was written during Chris' final year of music study
at Salford for his final composition exam.
The song, called The Mancunian Way, will be performed by primary school
children from the 72 nations of the Commonwealth to the athlete's village.
Each school - one from each of the 22 local authorities in the North West,
plus six additional Manchester schools - will interpret the song in their
own unique way. The children will perform in styles ranging from rap and
soul to samba, steel band and traditional choir music.
Sue Woodward, creative director of Manchester 2002, said: "We're asking
each school to perform their own interpretation of The Mancunian Way to
provide variety and colour to the ceremonies.
Chris said: "It's absolutely marvellous that The Mancunian Way is being
used at such a prestigious event - I'm thrilled, it's a dream come true."
While studying at Salford, Chris played lead tenor saxophone in the Salford
College Big Band. Chris formed his own jazz band when he left, comprising
former Salford College students and aptly named The Little Big Band.
Chris, now a professional musician and entertainer, has travelled all over
the world with his career. He runs has a successful business in Spain, coaching
tennis to schools in Malaga and Marbella.
