SONG FOR GAMES COUP
Rhyl musician Chris Turner
By Elwyn Edwards
A SONG written by a Welsh musician is to welcome athletes to the Commonwealth
Games in Manchester.
Singer, song writer and accomplished musician Chris Turner of Grosvenor
Avenue, Rhyl, is no stranger to the entertainment world having performed
in numerous concerts up and down the country and is a regular on some
of the world top cruise liners.
For Chris, who spends his summers coaching tennis in Rhyl, the news that
his songThe Mancunian Way had been accepted by the games organisers was
a dream come true.
Youngsters from seven Manchester primary schools will perform thesong
at special ceremonies for the 72 nations arriving at the athletes
village in Fallowfield.
They are among nearly 1,000 pupils from schools across the North West
who will interpret the song in their own unique way performing in styles
ranging from rap and soul to samba, steel band and traditional choir music.
Speaking from Spains Costa del Sol where he is currently"gigging"
in the evenings in the Marbella area, Chris told the Journal: Its
absolutely marvellous that The Mancunian Way is being used in such a prestigious
event - I'm thrilled, its a dream come true.
During the daytime Chris, still recovering from injuries received when
he was knocked down by a car, visits 10 international schools in the area
where he teaches tennis to youngsters.
In the meantime he is awaiting the outcome of a musical he has written
entitled Tiebreak.
He has already reached the last 50 of a worldwide search for new musicals
and expects to know the outcome sometime this week.
